Do you want to celebrate a birthday or promotion with friends and family but don’t want to affect ketosis?

Don’t worry; I’ve got you covered.

Below, I’ll cover everything you need to know about drinking champagne on keto. I’ll look at the carbs in champagne while providing you with yummy recipes and alternatives.

Is Champagne Keto-Friendly?

Since champagne is so sweet, many keto-dieters avoid it as they think it has tons of sugar.

But the average five-ounce or 150ml glass has four grams of carbs, and because you want to limit your daily carb intake to 30 grams per day, you can enjoy it on a keto diet in moderation.

However, not all champagne is created equal. You get seven main types of champagne:

  1. Brut nature champagne
  2. Extra brut champagne
  3. Brut champagne
  4. Extra dry champagne
  5. Dry champagne
  6. Demi-sec champagne
  7. Doux champagne

If you’re looking for a drink with the least carbs, opt for brut nature champagne. A five-ounce glass only has one gram of sugar, so you can enjoy several drinks without worrying about interfering with ketosis.

But watch out for doux, demi-sec and dry champagne. They contain between six and 12 grams of carbs per serving. So after two or three glasses, you’ll be spiking blood glucose and knocking yourself out of ketosis.

Champagne Nutritional Information

One glass of champagne has:

  • 121 empty calories
  • One to four grams of carbs
  • Zero fats
  • 7.4 mg of sodium
  • 104 mg of potassium
  • Trace amounts of vitamin C and iron

A Word Of Caution When Drinking Alcohol On Keto

Most keto dieters get hung up on champagne’s carb content. And while carb intake is important, it isn’t the only factor to watch out for.

Consider limiting your alcohol consumption because it can negatively impact not just weight loss but your ability to stay in ketosis.

We know that ethanol doesn’t spike insulin and isn’t stored in your body as fat. Your body removes it immediately using liver enzymes since it’s seen as a toxin. So you might look at this information and think that keto alcohol is fine.

However, alcohol is highly oxidative, which puts your liver under a lot of stress, triggering inflammation. This oxidative stress and chronic inflammation eventually leads to lifelong issues like:

  • Fatty liver disease
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer

Ethanol also blocks fat burning. When you drink alcohol, your body sees it as a toxin, and it pauses all other bodily functions, including fat-burning, to get rid of this toxin.

So if you’re facing a weight loss slump, try cutting alcohol out of your diet for a few months and see if it helps you lose weight.

Yummy Champagne Keto Recipes

Don’t feel like drinking plain champagne? Try these easy-to-make yet tasty mixed drinks recipes:

  • Champagne margaritas
  • Keto champagne cocktail
  • Keto mimosa

Champagne Margaritas

This keto champagne margarita is a personal favorite of mine. It only takes 10 minutes and requires six ingredients:

  1. Keto maple syrups
  2. Orange extract
  3. Fresh lime and lime juice
  4. Silver tequila
  5. Champagne
  6. Ice cubes and salt

All you have to do is pop your lime juice, keto maple syrup, orange extract, champagne, tequila and ice cubes into a blender.

Next, run your lime wedges around your champagne glasses with some coarse salt, pour your cocktail inside, and you’re good to go.

Keto Champagne Cocktail

The holidays are right around the corner, so if you have guests but don’t have time to whip up something fancy, opt for this champagne cocktail recipe. You’ll need three ingredients:

  • Champagne or low-carb sparkling wine
  • Vodka
  • Blueberries

You can drink several glasses without interfering with ketosis because it has less than two grams of carbs per glass. Pop some blueberries into a champagne glass, top it off with a shot of vodka and champagne, and serve!

Keto Mimosa

This bubbly cocktail is the perfect celebration drink if you dislike boring champagne. All you need is the following:

  • Champagne
  • Keto water flavor drops
  • Orange slices
  • Sugar-free sparkling water or orange juice

Pour a few flavored drops into your sparkling water and mix them together. Pour your champagne and orange slices into a glass with your flavored sparkling water, and enjoy!

Champagne Keto-Friendly Substitutes

Looking to shake up your keto alcoholic beverages? Consider these champagne alternatives:

  • Hard liquor
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Low-carb beer

Hard Liquor

Hard liquor like vodka, tequila, whiskey and rum is the best alcoholic beverage options on keto. It has a high alcohol content, so you don’t have to drink much.

The best part is that multiple brands are starting to use keto-friendly mixers like diet soda with little to no residual sugar.

For example, one shot of vodka has zero carbs. If you can get your hands on a zero-carb and zero-calorie mixer, you can enjoy a night out without worrying about ketosis.

Sauvignon Blanc

Low-carb wine like Sauvignon Blanc is also a good option on keto. It’s made from ingredients that don’t spike insulin, inflammation or blood sugar.

One glass of Sauvignon Blanc contains three grams of carbs, so you can occasionally enjoy a few drinks.

The only problem is that these bottles of wine are expensive. And you want to avoid cheap wine at all costs as manufacturers add a bunch of additives like grapefruit juice and syrups to give it extra flavor. These additives quickly knock you out of ketosis and spike inflammation.

So I’d recommend opting for a budget winemaker like Dry Farm Wines. These wines are made with the healthy ingredients and are specifically meant for keto dieters. If you sign up for the subscription, they’ll deliver the top wines to your doorstep, so you won’t have to go to the shop every time.

Low-Carb Beer

If you’re looking for a low-carb, low-alcohol alternative, try low-carb beer. Although traditional light beer is one of the worst alcoholic drinks for keto, most bottles of keto beer only contain two to four grams of net carbs.

It’s also a practical option if you’re a big fan of beer, but you just transitioned over to keto and are looking for low-carb replacements.

Final Thoughts On Is Champagne A Ketogenic Diet

Drinking champagne won’t kick you out of ketosis, but you want to limit your consumption. The occasional drink is okay, but when you start drinking multiple glasses in one sitting, problems start to occur.

It puts your body under oxidative stress, triggering inflammation. The body also prioritizes getting rid of alcohol because it sees it as a toxic, which pauses fat-burning.

So reduce your alcohol intake on keto and stick to low-carb champagne, hard liquors, high-quality red wines and low-carb beer.
